Wierton – Evening Shield match 6
The final match in the Evening series, and I am not looking forward to it as we arrive at 17:30 in a heavy thunderstorm, but Ryan just doesn’t seem bothered as all he wants to do is fish.
The Set-up
After the last match here was won on the pole, and having drawn a peg away from the island, Ryan decides to just fish on the pole at 4+2 (about 9m out). As this is at the bottom of the shelf, about 8ft deep, he sets up with a 0.6g NG XT Gimp with an olivette to get the bait down quickly. Bait would be 2 red maggots on a size 20 hook.
The All-In @18:30
After cupping in 2 lots of groundbait/corn, he settles down to fish as the rain finally eases off. 15mins gone, and he has his first fish, a nice hybrid of around 1lb which gives a good battle on the number 9 elastic. Catching a few more small roach and perch over the next 50 mins, before out shoots the elastic towards the middle of the lake, and the inevitable ping as the whole rig disappears off. It was probably a carp or a large perch, one of which seems to be going for the fish in the keepnet at the moment. As the rain stars up again, and the lightning brightens up the dull sky, things go a little quiet, and as it’s impossible to see the float in the rain, he comes in tight to the margin catching a few more small perch.
Eventually as the rain eases off, he goes back out on to the long line, and has a couple of small skimmers before the the heavens open up again at 21:15 for the end of the match.
Result
With only 6 of the 11 people catching, Ryan is in 4th place with 2lb10oz. A very good result considering the peg he drew and the horrendous conditions.
Although he has won the junior section of the evening matches, he has scored 43 points in the 5 out of 6 results, which would put him 4th in the overall competition. A great result in his first year of fishing. One very proud, wet, dad.
Report by Medway Mick:
I’m reliably informed that the 7 anglers had to battle through a couple of thunder storms! Nice to see another new name on the start list. I hope Justin was made welcome and wasn’t put off by his debut result.
Lou Buells won it with Bream on the method feeder from the left hand bank followed by Guy who was right of the carpark in one of the island swims.
Jon Overton’s third place was more than enough to prize the Evening shield away from me (until next year). Well done Jon.
In all, 14 different anglers took part which is a big improvement on last season.
