Wierton – Evening Shield match 2
Arrived at 17:30 on a lovely sunny, calm evening for the 2nd match of the Evening Shield match at Wierton Res.
The Set-up
Ryan drew peg 3, which in in the corner by the island, so the feeder was going to be the best option. Set up the 12ft Drennan S7 Comp feeder, 6lb main line, 35g Drennan flat feeder, 4″ 4lb hooklink with a size 14 power bandit. The groundbait was our first go with the Sonubait Krill, with a few 2mm feeder pellets thrown in. The hookbait to start off was an artificial piece of yellow sweetcorn.
Also set up the pole on 4+2 with a shallow XT Margin 0.2g float rig, with a size 16 red maggot hook.
The All-In
The whistle blew at 18:30, and Ryan tried to cast out tight to the island as I had already set up the clip for him. Not too accurate for the first 6 or 7 casts, but he did then start to get more accurate. He started to get a few small bites, but nothing really to strike in to, until about 20 minutes had gone and a lovely roach around 1lb.
Still getting a few small bites, he decides to change to an 8mm pellet, and not to cast tight to the island and comes away about 8ft. It’s doesn’t take long before he has his first bream skimming across the top to the net. He then catches another 2 in about 40 minutes, before it goes quiet.
It’s now 8:30, and he changes on to the pole using 2 red maggots. After chucking out a couple of balls of groundbait, he slowly starts to get some small bites, bit finds it hard to hit them. Eventually the bites are a bit more positive, and he catches the first of 3 roach, and another bream, just before the whistle at 9:15.
It has been quite hard for him, as this is only the 3rd time we have fished Wierton, but he has done very well. Especially as Guy on the next peg has blanked.
Results by Mick
8 anglers fished and most saw a few Bream with Terry Jarvis bagging the lions share with a bag caught on the pole with pellet hook bait. Terry fished the bank to the left of the car park close to the notice board (or is it a lifebuoy?)
John Overton followed up his win last week with a second place fishing the tip to the island and I pipped Lou for the final podium position with similar tactics to Terry in the island channel to the right of the car park.
