Ulcombe Rd – new pole test
With a windy weekend forecast, Saturday looked the best option as it was forecast dry, unlike Sunday so took a little trip to Ulcombe to test out new pole. Probably not the best time with the high winds, but new he could fish at short range. Although the Bung was not the best place for shipping back due to the fence, it was slightly sheltered and he would only need to fish at 2+2. First impression of the pole was that it was fairly rough to the touch, but it did ship in/out very well, and the fact it is so light also helps a lot.
Just one line at 2+2, and the margin if needed, so 2 roller puller top kits set up. One with 6-10 for the longer line and 10-14 for the margin. The water level was right up, so it was at it’s max depth of 3ft. Both rigs set up with an .4g AS2 float, spread out No9’s for the long line, with an 18 B611, and bulked for the margin with a 16 B611. The idea of the spread out shot was to target some of the nice rudd/roach, but there would certainly be the inevitable carp. No groundbait today, and having not got to the shop for bait, it would be down to some dead reds from the freezer and worm or pellet if needed.
First out with a single dead red, and feeding a few in the small pot with some micro’s. Not long before the first few rudd come in, a good start. Then after about 20 mins, the first carp on. Both of us little nervous to see how the pole performs, but Ryan has it under control with a big smile on his face. ‘I love this pole’ he declares, as he lands the first 3lb’er on it.
The carp are certainly starting to feed well, and they are the better stamp of fish around 2-3lb, so he swaps over the elastic to the 10-14 which gives better control. Did not expect it to fish this well, and keeping to the same line, just feeding as before after every 2-3 fish, they just keep coming.
A great 4 hours fishing, and around 70+lb of fish.
