Great Danes – 7th June
After waiting for the rain to stop, we arrive at an empty lake at 10:15, and spot a lizard trying to catch a bit of warmth off the black sheeting.
As it looks like it is going to rain later in the day, we have only come with Ryan’s seatbox, and I will just use the chair to fish if the weather stays dry for long enough. We set up in the corner by the small gate, where Ryan had a good result in the match on Tuesday.
Ryan set up on the pole tight in to the margin on the right hand side where he caught the carp on Tuesday, and fished 2 6mm cubes of luncheon meat over sweetcorn. After nearly around half an hour, he had his first proper bite, and he landed a 3lb common carp.
This seemed to scare of any more carp, as all that he was catching now were roach and gudgeon. I set up the top 2 with a small margin float, and fished out at about 6ft with a couple of red maggots just to see if I could catch a few small fish, and keep me busy. It was not long before I was catching small roach and the odd gudgeon like Ryan.
It was now around 12:30, and Ryan hooked in to another carp of about 2 1/2lb after loose feeding a few handfuls of luncheon meat. As I was just about to poor myself another cup of coffee, my float disappeared, and the elastic from the top kit just started stretching out towards the end of the lake. It was just about to head in to the reeds, when there was a ping, and I could see the float heading back towards me at a rate of knots. It caught just under the right eye on the cheek bone, and apologised to Ryan for the bad language. My did that sting, and lucky that it did not catch me in the eye.
While I had my coffee and sorted out the tangle, Ryan was in to another fish which seemed a little bit bigger than the other 2 carp he had caught.
This was a slightly better fish of 4lb, and in beautiful condition. It had started to rain now, and after Ryan caught another 3 carp, it was raining a lot heavier now. So after a good 4hr session we decided to pack up, and head back in the dry.
