First trip to Wierton Reservoir
After a wet start to the day, we headed off for our first trip to Wierton and arrived at about 10:45. The wind was fairly strong from the NE, and the reservoir is pretty open, but we chose to fish on the south bank as the pegs were a litlle flatter.
Set up was a 12ft Puddle Chucker, 4lb Preston Power Max main
line, 30gr open ended plastic feeder and a size 16 drennan carp feeder hook.
After casting out 4 feeders full of groundbait about 25 yds out, we fishing started fishing with 2 red maggots as hook bait.
Ryan had a few little knocks after a while, but just couldn’t hook anything. I had nothing until about 12:00, when, as usual, I was pouring a cup of coffee, and the rod rattled on the rest to a nice roach of about 1/2 lb.
The bites started to improve, but still finding it hard to hook anything, until I managed to land a 2 1/2lb bream.
Ryan took to my swim, and not long before he hooked in
to a nice bream which was covered in spawning tubercles. We had a break and chat with a few of the other anglers, who said that it was a little shallow from where we were fishing, but you can still get a few bream off there. We were going to try the waggler float, or pole for the roach, but the wind had picked up a bit and it would make it difficult to keep everything from drifting in.
It was now 4:00, and we decided to head home so Ryan could watch the rest of the football. We will certainly be back down again when the weather improves, and hopefully choose better swims.
